Standard Poodle Nutrition: Intelligence Needs Proper Fuel

Standard Poodles often surprise new owners with their athletic requirements. Despite their elegant appearance, they are a working breed at heart — bred as water retrievers — and their nutritional needs reflect that heritage.

Calorie Needs

An active Standard Poodle (25–35 kg) requires approximately 1,300–1,600 kcal/day. Show dogs or those in agility training may need significantly more.

Skin and Coat Health

Poodles are prone to skin conditions and allergies. Diet can play a significant role:

Bloat Risk

Like other deep-chested breeds, Standard Poodles are at elevated GDV risk. Apply the same feeding precautions as for German Shepherds: multiple small meals, no exercise after eating, no elevated bowls.

Safe Fruit Treats

Standard Poodles tolerate fruit well. Blueberries are an excellent training treat — low calorie, antioxidant-rich, and most Poodles love them. Apples and bananas are also safe (unlike for the Veldtspitz).
